Donald Trump has reported to Fulton County Jail in Georgia to surrender to authorities. He is being prosecuted for attempting to manipulate the election results in the state of Georgia. In jail, Trump has been arrested on thirteen charges. There is also a so-called mug shot made a suspect photo.

The formal arrest went quickly because the bail was already negotiated with the public prosecutor last week. The bail has been set at $ 200,000 (more than 183,000 euros).

Trump landed at 1 a.m. on a private plane in Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, where the prison where he was supposed to report is located. Accompanied by Steven Sadow, his new lawyer on the case, he drove to the prison amid massive media interest. Trump only appointed Sadow on Thursday instead of Drew Findling, the lawyer who has defended him until now. The new attorney is known as one of Atlanta’s top criminal defense attorneys.

After 20 minutes in jail, Trump headed back to the airport. There he briefly addressed the press. He said it was “a very sad day for America”. “We have done nothing wrong,” he said, calling the matter a “disruption of the electoral process”. He also reiterated his claim that the 2020 elections were not fair. There is no evidence for that claim.

Lockdown around prison

The area around the prison was under a “hard lockdown” around Trump’s arrest. Fulton County police officers have been threatened over the case against Trump and his co-defendants, according to CNN. Jurors were also threatened.

The former president is being prosecuted together with eighteen co-defendants for a criminal plot to change the result of the presidential election in his favor. A number of other suspects have previously reported to Fulton County jail, including Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. All suspects have until Friday afternoon 12:00 local time to report to the prison.

It is the fourth time this year that Trump faces criminal charges. The case in Georgia is the first not to take place at the federal level and also the first where the former president has to report to a prison instead of a courthouse.
