Full storm hits Norway on Thursday:

Wednesday and night to Thursday there was a storm in parts of Norway. It led to closed roads, a number of traffic accidents, landslides, floods and that over 3000 people woke up without electricity.

At Gullfjellet in Bergen, 100 millimeters of precipitation fell in a short time.

Now a full storm is expected again, and it is expected to hit land on Thursday morning.

Myth-ridden polar storm

– We expect a full storm. There will be a polar expression in Møre og Romsdal that will give the storm a boost. A polar storm occurs, and they tend to surprise us, says on-duty meteorologist Isak Slettebø in Storm.

Polar storms are known to be erratic and violent. Before, they were also perceived as mysterious. Then there were often stories that they suddenly appeared in the Barents Sea and surprised fishermen, who ended up sinking.

– They are not as mythical now, but you never quite know where they will meet and there are often big local differences, says Slettebø.

While it can be completely windless in the center of Bergen, for example, a full storm can ravage the outskirts.

Has consequences

Thursday morning has been led to trouble. Numerous mountain passes closed and ferries are canceled.

On the E39 in Ålesund, a car got stuck in a bend due to snow and difficult driving conditions. In the South-East police district, a tree fell over the road at Ådal on E16, which led to a traffic accident between two cars.

– The storm is expected to hit north of Stadt on Thursday morning, but it could have consequences for the whole country. It is a northerly wind and will be wind up to 20 meters per second in the whole of Sørlandet, says the meteorologist.

It’s getting worse here

It is in the north of Western Norway and in the northern mountain areas of Eastern Norway that will feel the worst of the storm.

Locally, the wind can be as strong as 28 meters per second. Careful has issued a yellow level warning for strong winds in large parts of southern Norway.

– It is very uncomfortable and then it is best to stay inside, says Slettebø.

The storm also brings a lot of precipitation.

– There may be 30 millimeters of precipitation north of Stadt, Nordfjord and in northern areas, he says.

In large parts of Western Norway have Careful issued warning level at yellow level for floods.

«Weather cocktail»

At the same time as strong winds and precipitation have been forecast, there is also a cold front to the south, which means that Sørlandet will experience a drop in temperature.

– The precipitation can thus turn to snow throughout the day all the way down to the lowlands. It will be quite cool and probably difficult driving conditions, says the meteorologist.

Western police district warns against this on Twitter.

– Sudden drop in temperature is expected during the night in the entire district. There will be sleet, snow showers and storms with strong gusts of wind. Be aware of this if you are going out to drive and are not shod for the lead, writes the police district.

A lot of snow is expected in northern Norway. In North Troms, there may be up to 30 centimeters of snow on Thursday.

– It is actually completely inconceivable how much weather there should be in one day in one country. It is a real weather cocktail, says Slettebø.
