Since the Japanese government decided to discharge Fukushima’s nuclear-contaminated water into the sea, many Fukushima fishermen were indignant, but also panicked and worried about their livelihoods. Takayuki Yanauchi, a local fishery practitioner, said that he had already been hit hard by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant leaks more than ten years ago, and he really couldn’t bear the second blow brought by the discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the sea.

Takayuki Yanuchi is a director of a fishery association in Onahama, Fukushima Prefecture. He has been engaged in fishery for more than 20 years. In recent years, he has been doing management work in the Onahama Fish Wholesale Market. He told reporters from China Central Radio and Television that the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the sea would cause serious damage to the local fishery, and they firmly opposed it.

Takayuki Yanauchi, director of the Fukushima Prefecture Onahama Bottom Trawl Fisheries Association: If the nuclear contaminated water is discharged into the sea, we will always oppose it, because we want the seafood in Fukushima Prefecture to continue to be sold in the market, and we need consumers accept. If everyone cannot trust the seafood of Fukushima Prefecture, the sales and income of fishermen’s seafood will be seriously affected.

Takayuki Liuuchi said that local fishermen have made a living by fishing for generations. Although their lives are not rich, they have always lived peacefully and peacefully. However, the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, as well as the subsequent nuclear power plant accident, dealt a devastating blow to the fishing livelihood of the local people, and local fishermen were unable to go fishing for a long time. Later, although the situation eased a little, the quantity and species of fishing have also been restricted. In 2010 before the earthquake, the marine fish catch in Fukushima Prefecture was 25,914 tons, but it has dropped sharply to 5,525 tons in 2022. Fishermen are eager to resume normal fishing. However, what they were looking forward to was the news that the nuclear contaminated water was discharged into the sea.

Takayuki Yanauchi, director of Onahama Bottom Trawl Fisheries Association in Fukushima Prefecture: (discharging the sea) is likely to cause the fish not to be sold or the price to plummet, which will have a great negative impact on the operation of our fish market. Income will also be reduced, and the interests of seafood workers in Fukushima Prefecture, including myself, will be damaged.

Takayuki Yanuchi said that the Japanese government and TEPCO had made a written promise in 2015 that they would not discharge nuclear-contaminated water if they did not get the understanding of the fishermen, but now the government wants to break the promise. This behavior makes them lose money. trust in the government. They are skeptical that the multi-nuclide treatment system can actually remove radioactive material and maintain normal operation for more than 30 years after being discharged into the sea.

Takayuki Yanauchi, director of the Onahama Bottom Trawl Fisheries Association in Fukushima Prefecture: Although the Japanese government and TEPCO say that there is no problem with draining the sea, many people will doubt it and feel uneasy about it. The Japanese government has held many explanatory meetings and exchange meetings, and each time they said the same content, everyone was very dissatisfied.

Yanauchi Takayuki also said that for his own livelihood and the lives of future generations, he and many fishermen have been running back and forth, calling for a stop to the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the sea.

Takayuki Yanauchi, director of Onahama Bottom Trawl Fisheries Association in Fukushima Prefecture: We have always hoped to purify the ocean in Fukushima, and hope that the fishermen in Fukushima will not be hit again.
