Former ČSSD MP Petr Wolf, who had been on the run for more than ten years, was arrested in Paraguay. Wolf has been hiding from justice since 2013, when he was due to start a six-year prison sentence for subsidy fraud. The Czech police searched for him in cooperation with Interpol, and thanks to intensive international cooperation, especially with the police in Paraguay and Argentina, he has now been caught.

Petr Wolf was convicted of fraud at the Ministry of the Environment, from which he and his wife received subsidies in the amount of 11 million crowns in 2005-2007 based on distorted and false data. These funds were partly used for personal purposes, which led to the ambassador’s criminal prosecution. Petr Wolf was not the only family member who was convicted of subsidy fraud. His wife, Hana Wolfová, was also implicated in the whole case and sentenced to three years in prison.

After his disappearance in 2013, a European and then an international arrest warrant was issued for Wolf. Wolf has been hiding for a long time, and even tried to change his identity. Now, after his detention, preparations are underway for his extradition back to the Czech Republic, where he should start serving his sentence.

Police marked the arrest on social network X for the significant success of international cooperation. The Czech public expects further developments regarding his transfer to the Czech Republic and his subsequent entry into prison, thus ending his long-term escape from the law.
