From Saturday, a liter of diesel may cost a maximum of 1,927 euros. That is the highest amount ever. Petrol prices are also rising. For petrol 95 you pay a maximum of 1.869 euros per liter, for petrol 98 that is a maximum of 1.977 euros per liter.

The war between Russia and Ukraine is making itself felt at the pump. Today, the maximum price for diesel is 8 euro cents. For petrol it is about 7 euro cents. The maximum prices thus reach record highs. Whether this upward trend will continue next week is uncertain. According to Johan Mattart, director of the Belgian petroleum federation BRAFCO, the markets have calmed down somewhat. Raw material prices fell. “If that is also the case on Monday, then prices will drop a bit by Wednesday.”

Major supplier

Russia is a major supplier of gas and oil, and as a result, market prices for those products have already skyrocketed. But those same markets breathed a sigh of relief after hearing of the sanctions imposed on Russia by Europe, the US and the UK. The ‘financial atomic bomb’ was not among them. For the time being, Russia is not banned from the international payment system Swift. Should that still happen, then, according to Mattart, new price increases cannot be ruled out. Russia can also increase the cost price of diesel and petrol, for example by turning the gas tap towards Europe. “There are no maximum limits for fuel prices, so no one knows where that could end,” Mattart says.

The announced price increase on Friday caused traffic jams at gas stations, especially along the Dutch border. A lot of people clearly wanted to quickly fill the car, some took jerry cans with them. “It’s been incredibly busy here all day. Shortly after noon we already had the turnover that we would only achieve on another Friday around 11 pm”, says Esther Van Camp, shop manager of the Esso gas station in Heffen (Mechelen).

fuel oil

Heating the home with fuel oil has never been more expensive than today. The maximum price for orders over 2,000 liters has increased by 6.77 euro cents to 0.9552 euro per litre. Finally, prices for CNG continue to rise. Today you already pay more than 3 euros per kilo at the pump. By way of comparison: in recent years the average annual prices for CNG have fluctuated between 0.80 and 1 euro.
