FTC Investigates OpenAI’s ChatGPT Over Data Privacy and Security Concerns

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots naturally involves various risks, mainly data privacy and potential data leakage. In connection with this, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has “taken to task” the creator of “ChatGPT”, “OpenAI”. The FTC has opened an investigation against the company over the risks posed by its large language AI models. The FTC is concerned that OpenAI is violating consumer protection laws by using “unfair or deceptive” practices and thereby harming the privacy and security of user data.

In its investigation into OpenAI, the FTC is particularly interested in information related to the ChatGPT software bug that leaked sensitive user data, including chat history and payment information. Although the company explained that the number of affected accounts was small, the FTC expressed concern about poor security practices. If violations on the part of “OpenAI” are detected during the investigation, the FTC has the right to impose a fine on the company or order to comply with additional regulations with the aim of strengthening data privacy and security.

The AI industry is currently under the scrutiny of many governments. The US government is particularly attentive in this regard. For example, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before the Senate in May where he defended his company, outlining the privacy and security measures it has in place while touting the benefits of AI. He also emphasized that OpenAI will become increasingly cautious and will continue to improve its data protection measures.
