FTA with Mexico boosted non-traditional shipments

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Mexico helped boost value-added shipments, particularly in agroindustry, iron and steel, fishing for Direct Human Consumption (CHD), metalworking and chemicals, which stood out for their growth since its entry into force. in 2012, reported the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

That year these shipments totaled US$ 244 million, and, in 2023, US$ 708 million 466 thousand, registering an average annual increase of 13.3%, agroindustry 29.2%, steel metallurgy (20.4%), fishing for Direct Human Consumption ( 11.6%), metalworking (11.1%) and chemicals (10.2% average annual increase).

According to figures from the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, in 2023 Peru exported 1,157 non-traditional items to that nation. Agribusiness led the list (US$ 341 million) with 39.3% of the total. Its supply consisted mainly of grapes, paprika and crude palm oil.

It is important to highlight the performance of grapes (US$ 130 million 090 thousand) with an increase of 79% in 2023 compared to 2022 (US$ 72 million 883 thousand).

The second sector by US$ FOB amount was the chemical sector (US$ 120 million 354 thousand) with 13.9% participation. Its leading products were new rubber tires, lemon essential oils and other plastic boxes, drawers, cages and similar items.

It was followed by metalworking (US$ 57 million) with 7% representation, exporting equipment for helicopters with an empty weight of more than two kilos and self-propelled probing or drilling machines.

Steel metallurgy (about US$ 56 million in 2023) sent other refined copper sheets and strips, refined wire and zinc alloys; and fishing for CHD (US$ 29 million 921 thousand) had frozen cuttlefish and balloons, squid and squid as star items with 89% of the total.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), in the negotiations Peru achieved preferential access for more than 12 thousand items, including prawns, flowers, canned fish, sweet cookies and wines.
