Fryslân must create approximately 38,000 hectares of new nature by 2030. This involves more than 35,000 hectares of ‘agricultural nature’ and almost 2,700 hectares of nature reserve.
The plan for the new nature is included in the draft document of the National Rural Area Program (NPLG). The government does not prescribe the number of hectares, the program should mainly help the province to gain insight into the approximate size of the task.
This approach was devised because the quality of the countryside and the quality of the environment are under pressure due to climate change. Sometimes there is too much, and other times too little water.
Too much nitrogen, the loss of biodiversity, soil subsidence, poor water quality and the soil becoming saltier also have a major influence.
