Chicago – BVB veteran Marco Reus described the championship lost on the last day of last season as the low point of his career so far. “It was a void because you were just one step away from actually making it. It was very tough, probably the toughest moment of my career because you want it so much for yourself but also for the fans, for the city,” said the former Dortmund captain in the club’s own podcast shortly before the end of the Bundesliga club’s eleven-day trip to the USA.
The fact that BVB lost the league lead they had won in Augsburg a week earlier (3-0) with a 2-2 win at home against Mainz was a “hard blow” to Reus, “because we had an incredibly good feeling after the game in Augsburg. We felt like it was our turn now.” The 34-year-old asked for understanding for his behavior after the final whistle, which was criticized by many fans. “I couldn’t take it anymore. I wanted to be by myself, without people looking at me and processing everything. At night I was sorry that I just went in. I wasn’t able to give anything back to the fans at that moment. That I only understood later,” he commented on his quick escape to the dressing room.
Reus: “Team and fans close ranks”
Reus sees the encouraging reaction of the fans after missing the championship as an encouragement for the coming season: “We have achieved a community with our fans again. Each of us players has noticed: What they have shown can be the percentage point that you can get in this It might take a year. It was a solidarity between us and the fans.”
Despite the transfer offensive by the defending champion from Munich, the native of Dortmund is confident about the new season: “We know that Bayern have strengthened and will continue to do so. But we have seen that a lot is possible if we stick together and muster the energy like we showed in the second half of the season in particular.” Reus added resolutely: “Our goal is still to be at the top. Not only because we were so close to it last year, but also because it is our aim.”
The trouble-free preparation so far without health setbacks fuels the anticipation of his possibly last year in the BVB jersey: “I’ve decided to go ‘all in’.”
