Frustration Erupts in Emergency Debate Over Waternet Issues

Council members of the opposition reacted this afternoon in the emergency debate on the Stopera with frustration at the situation at Waternet. Alderman Van der Horst understood the frustration and says that they are working hard on improvement. Waternet has been under fire for some time due to persistent problems with ICT and the resulting incorrect sending of invoices.

The alderman sent a letter this week about, among other things the improvement plan. “I have also tried to explain, precisely because we are now catching up with these big changes, the chance that things will go wrong now and then is also a bit higher than once we have caught up,” she said. “And the prognosis is that we will have caught up completely within a few years. And that there will be a kind of regular process from then on.”

SP councilor Erik Bobeldijk said she was ‘to a certain extent irritated’ by Van der Horst’s remark that she thought every incorrect billing took too long. “Invoices have not been going well for three years. And now another one has been added,” said the SP member.

“I do find it complicated that drinking water and water board tax are now completely lumped together,” replied Van der Horst. “Because nothing has happened in the field of drinking water for a year and that is what the municipality is primarily responsible for. And I understand that it is lumped together because the people of Amsterdam look at it differently and because it is also from Waternet is. But if I calculate back, it might be two years. And that’s too long.”

“I understand the irritation, but I can’t do magic either”

Van der Horst did not think she was trivializing the problems. “I understand the irritation, but I can’t do magic either. I see, and that may be on my side, an organization that of course also struggles with all that negative reporting. have taken steps. I also want to make sure that the organization does not turn inward, but continues to practice that transparency. So that we can openly adjust everything that goes wrong.”

VVD council member Daan Wijnants indicated that the council members also stand up for the organization. “It is about something. It is about significant financial consequences for Amsterdammers. For example, in my case I had to pay 250 euros in arrears. That is not such a problem for me, but for the supporters of Mr. Bobeldijk, that may be a completely different situation.”

Kevin Kreuger of JA21 said that he had not paid for drinking water since 2021, while Van der Horst indicated that it had been going well for a year. “I have passed on the positions, but I do not receive a letter and there has been no collection officer.”

According to Van der Horst, she meant sending wrong invoices or double invoices, which would not have happened for a year. “The other point, which I just mentioned on sleepers, we are behind on that. We also have a whole plan to find out and invoice those non-paying residents.”
