Little Radostina from Ruse spent 12 days in the hospital after drinking a sip of fruit juice, which she opened herself in front of her parents. The unfortunate incident happened during a family vacation at a hotel in the Golden Sands resort near Varna on February 11.
The little girl drinks one juice while she eats, but after half an hour she goes to get another one, of the same kind – sealed, opens it herself at the table, pours the contents into a cup, and just a few seconds later her mouth is foaming. Radostina feels bad, she only manages to say “my mouth burns”, the mother jumps up and takes her quickly to the toilet.
Foam comes out of the child’s mouth, she becomes all red, she can neither spit anything out nor gag her mouth, she complains that the burning goes down to her chest, she asks her mother to call a doctor.
The hotel staff also sprung into action, calling emergency services from the front desk. The medics arrived quickly, administered a life-saving injection and took the child to the intensive care unit of the “Sveta Marina” UMBAL in Varna.
Meanwhile, the father comes to his senses and collects the bottle with the eerie liquid, takes it to the doctors in the hope of finding out what it contains in order to make the correct diagnosis of the child.
The juice from the glass, however, mysteriously disappears.
The hotel told worried parents that they have been offering this type of juice for a long time and there has never been a problem.
Parents don’t get much information about the reasons that led to the child’s burn, they hear that it was probably due to some chemistry in the contents of the bottle.
During the treatment, the doctors found that the esophagus was affected and part of the stomach, where the liquid had been, had developed a slight ulcer.
Radostina was discharged 12 days later, on February 23, in good condition. There is a follow-up examination in two weeks, the doctors from the university hospital will monitor the affected organs as the child grows.
A report to the police was filed by the hospital, after which an investigation began under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office.
The entire amount of fruit juices available in the hotel at the time of the incident was seized and handed over to the investigators, the press service of the institution announced yesterday. A forensic chemical examination has been appointed, the result of which is expected to be released. After that, a forensic medical examination will be prepared.
The regional directorate of the BBAH has also undertaken its own investigation into the case.
All available quantities of the batch of the juice in question have been seized from the commercial network, warehouses and the production plant, the BABH reports.
The hotel refused to comment on the incident.
