From Wasteland to Miracle: The Green Achievements of Saihanba Forest

(BEIJING, June 13, 2023 PRNewswire=연합뉴스) Located in the northernmost part of Hebei Province, Saihanba is one of the world’s largest artificial forests.

China is committed to green development">

Covering an area of approximately 93,000 hectares, Saihanba is home to thousands of plant and animal species. Its fantastic natural environment attracts numerous tourists every year.

However, the situation in Saihanba has not always been this way. In the 1950s, Saihanba, once a royal resort, was turned into a virtual wasteland due to rampant logging, which threatened the capital and the surrounding area with relentless and frequent sandstorms.

In 1962, a massive effort was launched to transform this barren wasteland into a green ‘miracle’ by planting 500 million trees.

Saihanba’s forest area has increased from 11.4% to 80% in 60 years. Saihanba’s forests absorb 860,300 tons of carbon dioxide and release 598,400 tons of oxygen, while purifying 137 million cubic meters of clean water for the people of Beijing and Tianjin.

In addition, various advanced technologies have been adopted to protect the Saihanba forest from forest fires, from infrared radar forest fire detection and early lightning warning monitoring to forest fire video monitoring and satellite hotspot monitoring.

Saihanba Forest Fire Prevention Office Director Peng Zhijie said, “The system automatically sends a telephone alert to forest managers as soon as lightning with a power level above the threshold approaches Saihanba Forest.” We are also using drones.”

Thanks to technology like this, Saihanba forest is well protected while benefiting its inhabitants. Chinese President Xi Jinping praised Saihanba for its green achievements in 2021, saying, “Saihanba’s transformation is an example in the history of global ecological development.”

Respect for nature has its benefits

“All things are born according to their harmony, and each grows by obtaining its nourishment (All Things Gageukgi Hwai Saeng, Gaekdeukyiyeongiseong).” This is a Chinese proverb left by the great thinker Xunzi 2,000 years ago. Xi quoted the aphorism when speaking at the Leaders’ Summit on Climate in Beijing in April 2021 via video link. Saihanba is a vivid example of how harmonious development between humans and nature can lead to a greener future.

“Mother nature has always provided nutrients to human beings,” Xi said. “We must regard nature as our root, respect and protect it, and follow its laws.” “If you don’t respect nature or follow nature’s laws, nature will take revenge,” he said.

In 2020, China announced a dual carbon target of achieving a peak in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and realizing carbon neutrality by 2060 to ensure sustainable development.

The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China last October set out important key tasks for China’s journey in the next five years, including promoting green development and a harmonious relationship between man and nature.
