WHAT IS THE CENTER?
In theory, the spectrum of the center is one that is in the middle of right and left positions in the political arena. However, in practice, in a scenario like the Colombian one in which the majority of the presidential candidates call themselves the center, the definition of this spectrum can become ambiguous. For Yann Basset, professor of Political Science at the Universidad del Rosario, this is a notion that has at least two main senses. “The first is the sense of simple relative location, which tries to be located in a middle point between the left and the right, it would be a type of ‘center of gravity’. In part this explains why everyone wants to be a center, because that is how they define themselves as those who have the best chance of reaching the whole world ”, said the academic. On the other hand, Basset stated that in terms of doctrinal content, the center is what most resembles liberalism “being the right more similar to conservatism and the left to socialism. In this sense, it could be said that liberal positions could be located in the center, for example, in matters of equity, abortion, drugs and other issues, ”he pointed out. For her part, Carolina María Horta Gaviria, professor at the UPB’s Faculty of Political Sciences, stated that from the political thinking of the parties the center could be considered as a place without a defined ideological profile, however she pointed out that it also lends itself as a strategies to achieve alliances. “When we speak of the center, we can refer to the place where all political forces and personalities can feel identified because there would not be very marked differences regarding ideological issues,” said the analyst. In this sense, the university teacher pointed out that the option of calling itself a center can be a political strategy that gives rise to the possibility of making alliances and “a certain cooperativism” to find a point of balance on certain issues. “A reflection in this sense is that the center should be clear about the political agenda that brings together its thoughts. We must bear in mind that there are issues that do not depend on spectra, such as Human Rights ”, he pointed out.

The lack of women worries
In the midst of the repetitive discourse around who belongs and who does not belong to the political center, on the part of the presidential candidates, attention has been diverted to the scarce participation of women among the names of candidates to arrive at the House of Nariño next anus. In the presidential party that the three great coalitions make up, to date there is only one woman: Francia Márquez, from Gustavo Petro’s Historical Pact. Thus, this is a totally different scenario from the 2018 presidential elections, where the three main presidential candidates had a woman as their vice-presidential formula, like this: Iván Duque with Marta Lucía Ramírez, Gustavo Petro with Ángela María Robledo and Sergio Fajardo with Claudia López. Faced with this situation, Alejandra Barrios, director of the Electoral Observation Mission (MOE), warned that the participation of women in the presidential elections is tiny, as well as for legislative elections, where it is at risk that there are gender parity, since the Constitutional Court has not approved the new Electoral Code. “Parity in the congressional lists for 2022 is at risk. We warn of the low participation of women. There is a lack of clarity in the rules of the game, as the Constitutional Court has not yet endorsed gender parity in the lists as proposed by the New Electoral Code, ”said Barrios, who clarified that in this way the lists would not be 50% women and 50% men, but they would continue to be 70% men and 30% women. Given that lack of female quota for the presidential elections, this Monday Juan Fernando Cristo publicly invited Íngrid Betancourt and Ángela María Robledo to be part of the Centro Esperanza Coalition as presidential candidates and go to the consultation. “Colombia needs more women in politics. Valuable women competing for the candidacy of the Centro Esperanza Coalition. For this reason, I invite Íngrid and Ángela María to participate in our presidential consultation, ”said Cristo.
