A 102-year-old who moves out of the retirement home to live in her own apartment again? Unusual. The courageous step that Martha Goth from Kaufbeuren took in the spring of 2023 made her an internet celebrity within a few hours. A few days ago, the pensioner was able to celebrate her 104th birthday.
Kaufbeuren-Neugablonz – A year and a half ago, thousands of users on social media had a lot of respect and admiration for the special woman from Kaufbeuren. Many people could hardly believe how she waved goodbye to the Hospital Foundation’s nursing home on Gartenweg to live alone again in a ground floor apartment in Kaufbeuren. Since then, a social station has taken over her care.
Son Günther also played a huge part in making something like this possible. He lives in the same house and still looks after his mother every day. Mayor Stefan Bosse was also able to see for himself that she is doing really well there – she is visibly at home, according to Bosse’s impression, who congratulated Martha Goth on her 104th birthday in early August.

“It is always fascinating when I am with the people of Kaufbeuren who reach such a great age. And I always have to smile when I am invited to their next birthday party the following year. That shows what an incredible joy of life there is in those over 100 years old,” said the mayor.
The Neugablonz music association also joined the small garden party with family and friends and played a few pieces especially for the birthday of one of Kaufbeuren’s oldest residents.
