From the first of September, changes in the dictionary of the Bulgarian language come into force – 2024-08-10 12:48:54

The goal is to avoid ambiguity or complexity in writing and speaking

The philosophy of the upcoming changes in the new dictionary of the Bulgarian language from the first of September is to simplify some of the forms, so as to avoid ambiguity or complexity in writing and speaking. Prof. Vladko Murdarov from BAS explained this in the program “Before All” on BNR, KROSS Information Agency reported.

“When it comes to compound names, only the first word should be written with a capital letter. Recently, the trend, primarily under the influence of the English language, is to write each of the components with a capital letter, i.e. if we have Bulgarian National Radio, people they overdo it and write both national and radio with a capital letter, although with Bulgarian National Radio only the first “B” should be capitalized, Prof. Murdarov explained.

He also explained the changes concerning the polite form Vie.

“When I address someone, to a person, then the “B” is capital, i.e. I answer your letter or congratulate you. However, nowhere was it noted what the situation should be when we do not address one, and to many people. That’s why if I write a letter or receive a letter that says: “Gentlemen, your project has been accepted”, should it be capital or small? Many people wrote capital, but a lot more people wrote small letter. We decided precisely to ease the work, to simply say that as long as it is a polite form, it should be written with a capital letter,” said Prof. Vladko Murdarov.
