Did you think you were going to enjoy a ‘summer of love‘, you are now in quarantine because you are infected with the corona virus. It mainly happened to young people who went crazy in nightclubs and at festivals after the relaxation of June 26. They think it is right that Prime Minister Rutte apologized today for the relaxation, which in retrospect came too quickly.
One of those young people is 24-year-old Jorinde van den Berge from Utrecht. She was recently vaccinated with the Janssen vaccine at the GGD as part of the ‘Dancing with Janssen‘-initiative. With a vaccination certificate in her pocket and a Testing for Access corona test (which she never received the results from), she went out in Eindhoven and was at a festival in Amsterdam a weekend later.
Last Thursday she turned out to have corona. “I’ve been really sick for three days, now I’m feeling a bit better. I’m still very tired – I sleep 12 or 13 hours a night – and I quickly get out of breath,” she says. “I am very disappointed. I was going to work in the hospital five days a week this summer, but that is not possible now. And it is not nothing. You hear about young people who suffer from long covid.“
Jorinde thinks she contracted the virus at the Amsterdam festival, despite the strict checks at the gate. “A friend of mine was also infected there and I saw many people online who had the same story. Apparently Testing for Access is not safe enough, because cheating with a QR code was really not possible there.”
‘We are young, so we take the risk’
24-year-old Leonie (her real name is known to the editors), also from Utrecht, probably became infected in a nightclub. “On Wednesday I got the first Pfizer shot and on Saturday it was a party. The shot hadn’t really worked in yet, I’m guessing.”
In retrospect, she regrets going out. “Why did I go there when all the signals were on red? Not from the government, admittedly, but just from a practical point of view whether it is useful or not. My friends and I thought it was a bit crazy that you immediately after the vaccination received a QR code, such as with ‘Dancing with Janssen’. But in the end you think: we are young, so we take the risk.”
Leonie isn’t quite better yet; she is hoarse, a little tired and doesn’t taste anything yet. The move she was in the middle of has come to a halt for a while. She also has doubts about other plans this summer. “I am especially curious whether Lowlands can continue, because I have a ticket for that. I can imagine that it is not allowed, but that makes me a bit despondent.”
“We thought: we can just go out for a while,” says student Karin, who got corona despite her vaccination:
