In French, the name Meatpacking District can be translated as the “meat packaging district”. This area of Manhattan was indeed the area that housed the main slaughterhouses in New York City, until the 1960s and 1970s. The slaughterhouses have closed their doors but the name has remained! The district has now gone from steak to fashion, as the association in charge of promoting the district has fun.
