From Spider-Man sweetheart to drug-addicted Rue in “Euphoria”: Zendaya (25) is the new Hollywood revelation

Who is Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman?

  • American actress, singer, model
  • Daughter of a white mother and a black father
  • Was already on the Disney Channel at the age of 14
  • Stars in the hit HBO series “Euphoria”
  • Is extremely popular with young people and has more than 122 million followers on Instagram
  • Currently in theaters in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Dune”

“Euphoria” (2019-2022)

In the highly popular HBO series “Euphoria” (which can be seen with us on Streamz), Zendaya plays the character Rue, a teenager who has come off drug addiction but finds it difficult to fulfill her intentions to stay clean.

For her portrayal in the series Zendaya became the youngest woman ever to win the Emmy for Best Leading Actor in a Drama Series.

Zendaya is 25, which means she is part of Generation Z (Gen Z). Through social media (she currently has 122 million followers on Instagram alone) and her projects, she has a huge influence on that generation.

Zendaya also explicitly used that influence yesterday to warn about the new season of “Euphoria”. She especially wants to protect her young fans from topics such as drug use and addictions and emphasizes that the series is actually intended for an adult audience.

“This season – perhaps more so than the last – is very emotional, dealing with subjects that can be shocking and difficult to watch. Please only watch if you’re comfortable with it,” she says.

And Zendaya certainly knows what she is talking about, because in interviews following the release of the second series she already indicated that during the recording of the series she “internalized the agony of the main character Rue so much that her body sometimes almost physically resisted Rue’s actions and words”.

Disney Channel (2010-2018)

Despite her young age, Zendaya is anything but a newcomer to the film and television world. Her career began at Disney in 2010. At the age of 14, she can already be seen in the Disney Channel series “Shake it out” as Raquel “Rocky” Blue.

In her teens she also published a book: “Between you and me: How to rock your tween years with style and confidence”. “Those years can be very fun and exciting, but also intense in a girl’s life,” she says about this in 2013, the year in which she also releases her debut album as a singer. “You are looking for your own voice and your own style. There is a lot of drama in your relationships. I hope this book will help girls get through the hard times and appreciate the fun times more.” No wonder Zendaya is an example and idol for many.

Zendaya realizes at a young age that she can do it in her own way and through her job influence want to exercise. In 2015, she can be seen in “KC Undercover”. It’s important to her that her character in that sequence isn’t necessarily good at “softer” activities like singing and dancing. “I wanted her to do martial arts, to do everything a boy can do, but I also want her to be a little socially maladjusted, not a cool kid. I want her to be normal while living an abnormal life.”

It’s hard for a young person from a different background to watch TV and not see anyone who looks like you

In addition, she also finds diversity very important on the screen. “It’s hard for a young person from a different background to watch TV and not see anyone who looks like you. Representation is very important.” Zendaya senses this very well because she herself is a child of an African-American father Kazembe Ajamu (Coleman) and a white mother Claire Stoermer.

In 2015, Zendaya reacts very strongly to the negative reactions she gets after the Oscars on her dreadlocks. “I wore dreadlocks to show them in a positive light and to remind people of color that our hair is good enough. (…) I suggest some people listen to “I’m not my hair” by India Arie and think for a moment before opening their mouths to judge so quickly,” it sounds. Later that year, Mattel even released a Barbie doll with the same look as a tribute.

“The greatest showman” (2017)

With “Euphoria” Zendaya has completely broken through, but she has also been on the radar of film lovers for several years.

In 2017 Zendaya already shines on the silver screen. She plays the role of Anne Wheeler, a trapeze artist in the musical film “The Greatest Showman” which also stars Hugh Jackman.

“Spider-Man” (2017-…)

The fans of “Spider-Man” see her popping up in the most recent movies as MJ, the love of Peter Parker (Tom Holland).

In 2017 Zendaya first appeared in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, in 2019 she can be seen in “Spider-Man: Far from home” and at this moment in the halls still runs “Spider-Man: No way home”.

Zendaya and Holland have been a couple in real life for some time now. The fact that Zendaya is slightly larger than Holland could immediately count on the attention of the specialized press. But the actress reacted very witty. “Actually this is normal, my mother is also taller than my father, my mother is taller than everyone else.” Holland said he himself is “rather small”. “No one was tested for the role who was shorter than me.”

Whether and how there will be a sequel for her in the “Spider-Man” movies is not yet clear at this point.

“Dune” (2021-2023)

2021 was in any case the year in which Zendaya was indispensable for all possible screens, because Zendaya also plays in that other highly anticipated film “Dune”.

In the film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel, Zendaya primarily appears as Chani in the visions of the character Paul Atreides (role of Timothée Chalamet).

But this film will normally get a sequel in 2023 in which Zendaya’s share will be a lot bigger.

About that character, Zendaya herself says: “She’s a tough one, a warrior. She was born on that planet. And when another boy shows up, she sees that he carries the future in her.”

“Malcolm & Marie” (2021)

In 2021, “Malcolm & Marie”, a Netflix Original, written and directed by “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson, will be released.

In that black-and-white drama, filmmaker Malcolm (role of John David Washington) goes home with his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya) after a festive premiere. The evening quickly takes a different turn, partly because Malcolm forgot to thank his girlfriend in his speech.

Just like in “Euphoria”, Zendaya also plays a self-destructive ex-addict and that produces verbal fireworks.

2021 was therefore already the year in which Zendaya was ubiquitous and there is undoubtedly a lot more in the pipeline for the coming years, such as the sequel to “Dune”.

I think it’s an exciting idea to direct

In the future, Zendaya may expand her list of professional activities as well. “I think it’s an exciting idea to direct. That’s why I’m on set so often. When I don’t have to act in scenes myself, I try to learn as much as possible, then I walk around and ask the crew all kinds of things.”

“I just want to do the things that make me happy and complete me as an artist,” Zendaya said. “If one day I have a completely different career path because of that, then I allow myself to do that.” So to be continued.
