Despite the bad weather, it was very busy at the commemoration of death in Oisterwijk. At the same time, the Liberation Fire was collected by Taxandria Athletics.

At the Remembrance Day in Oisterwijk, after the silent procession, led by the guilds and banners, people gathered at the monument on the Gemullehoekenweg. After the opening speech by the chairman of the foundation on May 4, Mayor Hans Janssen addressed the people and reminded us that it is repeated again and again; war. Poems were also read by various people, including children from Oisterwijk schools. Wreaths were then laid at the monument by various boards of foundations. The wreaths were presented by boys and girls from Scouting. The oldest wreathlayer was 96 years old and the youngest was 10 years old.

After the Last Post everyone was silent for two minutes and then the Wilhelmus was sung.

For the first time, the Jewish deceased were also commemorated for whom stumbling stones were laid in Oisterwijk, tiles were made for them and placed at the monument. ‘It was very impressive to experience this ceremony and it is good to take a moment to reflect on everything that happened during the war,’ says Carien van de Pas, who also took some photos (click).

On Saturday, Taxandria Athletics also started a relay from Wageningen (see below). The athletes collected the Liberation Fire there. This was received on Sunday morning in Oisterwijk.
