Susana Osorio had everything against her when she arrived in New York from her Dominican Republic: she didn’t speak English, she had an abusive stepfather, and her family of six lived in an apartment a small studio. On top of everything, she had to leave school at the age of 16 because at that age she became a mother.
But her passion for cooking saved her.
He started selling breakfast to workers in a union office where his brother worked. He already had ideas about business because all his childhood and part of his adolescence he had seen his grandmother managing a pulpería – or grocery store -. The woman also worked in the slaughterhouses and dealt with meat.
“She was an old woman who knew more about mathematics than the devil, and she never went to school,” said Susana, who grew up in the country, in a place where there was no electricity. , the floor was dirty and the family ate whatever they worked for themselves.
That was the beginning of a restaurant empire that employs around 260 people. As a businesswoman, Susana is the owner and co-owner of the Mamajuana Cafe, Mamasushi and Chinito Latino franchises. By the end of the year, a total of fourteen restaurants will be operating under the management of this businesswoman in New York City and nearby cities. Currently there are twelve open.
Nothing has been easy, although the pandemic is the worst thing that Susana has seen in this business, because she had to close all her stores until she was allowed to open only for issuing orders. At that time he had more than 300 employees.
“This is a business of consistency, stability and resilience,” he said. “You have to fight day by day.”
Currently, Susana’s goal is to open branches of Mamajuana and Mamasushi at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports and at Penn Station. If she manages to establish her restaurants there, it will be one of Susana’s most successful things, as thousands of people pass through these places every day.
For her, she has achieved all this because she is a person of character.
“That will bring you success,” he said.
