From postage stamp garden to New York chic garden

The couple is not satisfied with the appearance of their garden. It’s small, empty and bare. They would like a combination of modern, chic and green. They also want a nice place to sit and are looking for a practical solution for their garbage can. Because that is an eyesore, especially in such a small garden. In addition, the fence is rather rickety and there is a large shrub that has completely grown into it. They can both go away from Mandy and Joost. Tom and the team will work on the garden in Alkmaar.

New tiles for a quiet atmosphere

The tiles that were in the small garden were very small, which creates a lot of joints. Consequence? A restless atmosphere. So Tom has replaced the small, old tiles with larger and lighter tiles. Because these are a bit lighter in color and there are much fewer joints, the garden immediately gets a calmer and more modern look.

Gate and fence

The old fence was very rickety and the gate was at the side of the garden. For the new fence, Tom has chosen to place the gate in the middle of the garden.

The posts of the fence are made of Douglas wood. These cannot go directly into the ground, because then they will be damaged by moisture and air. That is why Tom first treated them with a rubber seal to just above the ground.

Tom has secured the pole where the gate will hang with concrete. This way he can be sure that the pole will remain standing and will not hang. Tom made the fence from thin, vertical slats with a small space in between.

New York chic

To the garden that real New York chic To give it a look, Tom has also placed slats against the stone wall. To do this, he first hammered horizontal leaves against the wall with a concrete drill and hammer plugs. He has attached a black cloth to it, so that a nice contrast is created. In addition, it provides an extra spatial feeling. Vertical slats have been placed against this, with a little space in between each time. These are the same slats as the fence is made of. In the middle of the wall Tom has left space for the lounge sofa.

Click conversion

The waste bin cannot be left on the street with Mandy and Joost and must therefore remain in the backyard. But such a click is not the most beautiful addition to a garden. That is why Tom has made a small conversion for it in the corner of the garden, completely in the style of the rest of the fence and bench.

planters

Tom has made a number of planters in the garden. For this, concrete plywood has been used. These are hardwood planks with a protective layer over it. This protects the wood from moisture. In this case, the layer is black, so that it corresponds to the black bottom layer of the fence. Because here, too, the planters are covered with the vertical slats that recur throughout the garden.

Custom sofa

As Mandy and Joost indicated, they really want a lounge area to sit in the garden. That is why Tom has made a bench completely custom-made for the garden. The bench has been placed against the wall between the two planters and has the same New York chic style that Tom has continued throughout the garden. Instead of vertical slats, he made the bench from horizontal slats to break up the pattern a bit.

Green

Of course, no plants can be missing in a garden. Tom has therefore filled the planters with lots of different greeners. One of those plants is the black bamboo, or Phyllostachys nigra. This type of bamboo has black stems that contrast beautifully with the fine, green leaves.

Tom also planted the finger plant in the garden. This Fatsia japonica spider web is a special species because of the white spots on the leaf.

To add some flowers to the garden, Tom chose the Armeria maritima, or English grass. These are thin stems of up to 20 centimeters with cheerful light flowers on top.

“I’m tense now yes”

Before Mandy and Joost enter the garden, Tom asks how they are doing. “I’m tense now, yes,” says Joost. But when they finally get to see their new garden, they both can’t stop smiling. “How cool guys!” Mandy exclaims happily. So again a successful project!
