RELEASE – Sun and spring mildness brought out the French in numbers this Saturday. For a few hours, they almost forgot about the Covid-19 epidemic, which the death knell for the curfew reminded us of.

For many, the desire to take advantage of the good weather was stronger than the caution. Sun, a big blue sky and spring temperatures. This Saturday, the French did not shy away from their pleasure. Predictably, after months of social life in parentheses, it was time for relaxation and recklessness. As in Paris in the chic district of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where a compact crowd poured in continuous flow in the shopping streets at the beginning of the afternoon.

Covid-19: France affected by a second wave of magnitude

With family or friends, many seem to have almost forgotten the Covid-19 epidemic, which has killed more than 84,000 people to date. “I think it’s exceptional. The weather is nice, and people are allowing themselves a little freedom”, explains a thirty-something, all smiles. Pint of beer, ice cream cone or cigarette, the mask inevitably falls under the chin or ends up in a pocket. “Nobody respects the sanitary instructions. At the same time, it’s starting to take a long time. People are fed up”, excuse another.
In the middle of the afternoon, a patrol finally intervenes. Megaphone in hand, a police officer reminds passers-by of the rules of use during this pandemic period. In ten minutes, the street empties. 6pm approaching, everyone goes home. For Saturday night fever, we will have to wait a little longer. Throughout the weekend, police checks are stepped up throughout France. And the fine of 135 euros in the event of non-compliance with the curfew remains in force.
We want to get some fresh air, to relax a bit

At the same time, in Lyon (Rhône), the city center is still crowded with people. To prevent gatherings, the prefecture issued an order to ban alcohol consumption on public roads. But the instructions are far from being respected by all. And the barrier gestures remained at home. But the police keep watch, confiscating goblets of beer and bottles of alcohol that end up in the gutter.
In Dunkirk, in the North, it is also difficult to resist the call of the sea by this beautiful sun. “We want to get some fresh air, to relax a bit”, explains a resident, met on the seaside. “It’s in my pocket. I thought it wasn’t mandatory”, she justifies herself. Since Monday, faced with the outbreak of Covid-19 and in particular the British variant, the municipality has made the wearing of the mask compulsory, including on the beach and the dike.

The trend over the last three days is not good, it is no longer good

An enchanted parenthesis that occurs while the number of contaminations remains relatively high in the territory. 22,371 new cases have been detected over the last 24 hours (against 24,116 the day before and 21,231 last Saturday). Hospital pressure also remains high, with 25,269 patients with Covid-19 hospitalized, including 3,369 in intensive care. On a national level, “the trend over the last three days is not good, it is no longer good”, deplored this Saturday the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, traveling to Nice, where a partial or total reconfinement is envisaged in the face of the outbreak of cases.
