The University of Groningen (RUG) already has 25 percent more pre-registrations than last year, and the university cannot cope with that, says Rector Magnificus Cisca Wijmenga. The University of Groningen will therefore end distance education in the coming academic year. International students who study in Groningen must from now on also live in Groningen.
That reports the University newspaper .
The university cannot cope with the large influx, said rector magnificus Cisca Wijmenga on Thursday in a committee meeting of the university council. “We’re heading for drama.”
No distance education should deter students
Distance education will therefore be discontinued from next academic year and students who study in Groningen must also be present here: large lectures are offered online, but in-depth tutorials are only physical and no alternatives are offered. Wijmenga hopes that this ‘will have a deterrent effect’.
To prevent room shortages, international students must have arranged a room before they come to Groningen, says the rector.
