From now on, it will be prohibited to participate in road traffic with unregistered parking meters in Latvia

Amendments to the Road Traffic Law come into force on January 1 of this year, which stipulates that the registration of electric scooters and cycle rickshaws is mandatory, and a state registration sticker must be affixed to their structure. The existing vehicles had to be registered until March 31, 2024, but from today it is forbidden to participate in road traffic with unregistered vehicles.

Amendments to the regulations also apply to self-made or rebuilt electric scooters. Likewise, electric scooters registered up to now must be registered in accordance with the new procedure and must receive a new registration sticker.

The registration of the electric scooter is carried out by the Road Safety Directorate (CSDD). An electric scooter can also be registered on the CSDD e-service platform “e-CSDD” or in person at CSDD customer service centers.

Also, the amendments provide that drivers of electric scooters under the age of 17 must wear a protective helmet and, in conditions of poor visibility or intense traffic, preferably clothing with light-reflecting elements, such as a reflective vest.

On the other hand, in order to reduce possible risks, drivers of electric scooters must drive at a speed that does not endanger road traffic safety and does not exceed the maximum permitted speed – 25 kilometers per hour (km/h).

CSDD had issued 2,439 electric scooter registration stickers from the beginning of this year until March 20, but as the end of March approached, the number of electric scooter registrations increased every day.
