Many people call their loved ones from vacation. Or they send a message via messenger. At least that’s what a representative survey by Bitkom Research shows.

But social media is also used to send greetings from vacation. Almost half (48 percent) use Instagram or Facebook for this. This is a particularly popular tool among vacationers aged between 16 and 29 (70 percent), while only 14 percent of older people aged 65 and over want to use it.

What about the classic postcard?

Even though communication is becoming increasingly digital, slightly less than half (46 percent) plan to send greetings from their holidays with a postcard or letter. There is no major difference between the age groups here: Among 16 to 29 year olds, 48 percent want to send greetings in this analogue way, which is a similar number to the 65+ age group (52 percent).

But video calls (42 percent) are also popular with many people as a way to get in touch from vacation. On the other hand, only around one in ten (12 percent) want to write an SMS. Emails come in last place at 4 percent. For most people, sending a short message to family, friends and acquaintances is part of their summer vacation: only 3 percent of travelers are completely foregoing holiday greetings this year.
