Even on the Sanremo stage the “brilliant” smiles appear. It is Mahmood who shows off the decoration on his incisors, in one of the pre-festival appearances. The singer, who thanks to the help of nutritionist Monica Germani is taking care of his look in every detail, also wore a red lace-up bodice that highlights his renewed physical shape.
In the nineties there were glitter in the incisors, which soon expanded in the hands (or rather in the mouths) of rappers, becoming real removable prostheses made of precious materials. Today, tooth jewelry, technically grillz o tooth gems, are no longer a phenomenon limited to the world of music, but a style trend that is transforming them into increasingly luxurious and creative works, halfway between prosthetic make-up and dental creation. This is also demonstrated by the success of figures such as Thomas Connelly, “the father of diamond dentistry”as he defines himself on Instagram, borrowing a description that Rolling Stone dedicated to him: since the Los Angeles dentist redid his teeth in 2021 Post Malone with porcelain veneers, platinum crowns and diamonds instead of canines (total cost of the operation: 1.6 million dollars), the requests for grillz and deluxe prosthetics have increased so much that, as he told the New York Times, today Connelly performs diamond dentistry almost every day.
He is also the creator of the most talked about prosthesis of recent times: the titanium implant with which Kanye West covered his teeth, a unique pattern designed by West himself, with plates that, according to the Daily Mail, cost more than diamonds. “It is not clear how the titanium prosthesis was made, but Dr. Connelly reassured that the natural teeth were not removed. He also reported that the prostheses were fabricated to mimic the exact occlusion, maintain its phonetics, respecting the masticatory function and the possibility of hygiene through a tailor-made device”, he tells us Clotilde Austonidentist specialist in odontostomatological surgery and smile influencer.
History of the smile, from the Mona Lisa to the “dictatorship” on TikTok

Perhaps it is precisely by seeing her father’s titanium implant or her mother Kim Kardashian’s tooth gems (she had applied them years ago for a photo shoot for her cosmetic brand) that also their firstborn North West at just 10 years old she decided to embellish her smile with dental jewels, as she revealed in a video posted on TikTok at the beginning of the year. The grillz trend, however, is not suitable for children: “Grillz are devices for which adults, to avoid damage, must pay particular attention, and they are not recommended for children“, warns Dr. Austoni. “The hygiene of the device and of the teeth in children risks being insufficient, not to mention that during the growth phase the teeth progressively change and, with the completion of the dental exchange, we would have the risk that the external device can cause damage to the emerging permanent teeth.”
Outside the Kardashian-West family, several stars have relaunched and revisited the dental jewelry trend, from Dua Lipa to Bella Hadid, from Iris Law and Rosalìa, who started 2024 by showing off new teeth on Instagram with colorful jewels of different shapes and sizes. If, in fact, gold and silver are the cult colors of the grillz, Rosalìa has chosen fluorescent jewels fuchsia, green, blue and red, in the shapes of hearts and stars. A “soft pop” revisitation of the trend which, judging also from the comments, encourages you to try the grillz even outside of shootings and red carpets. But the trend of the precious smile must be followed with many precautions: “While to have fixed grillz it is necessary to file the dental enamel, to create removable ones it is sufficient to take impressions of the dental arches, but even in this case I advise against purchasing the jewels on the Internet. Grillz must be tailor-made for the individual smileotherwise it could damage it significantly”, warns the dentist.
In addition to a tailor-made construction, to also prevent the teeth from chipping during insertion, the use of grillz also requires other useful precautions to avoid possible damage. “I recommend going to the dentist to receive appropriate instructions for use brush your teeth well, but also wash your grillz well every day“, suggests Clotilde Austoni. “It is also important to always remove these jewels before eating or drinking sugary drinks, to avoid the accumulation of bacteria and food residues, which could lead to tooth decay and bad breath.” Finally, it should be remembered that the most appropriate use of grillz is occasional: “The opposing teeth can wear out following prolonged contact with the grillz, while their rubbing on the oral mucous membranes can irritate them, creating canker sores and ulcers, especially if worn for long periods”.
