From June to date, there are 52 murdered in the electoral process

Mexico City. Since June of last year, there have been 158 attacks on candidates and people related to the current electoral process, of which 52 ended in murders, among them 28 were pre-candidates and candidates. In addition, there were nine kidnappings and 75 threats.

According to the second Report on Electoral Violence, 2023-2024 process, prepared by Laboratorio Electoral, an independent center for research, reflection and analysis on electoral issues, Morena is the party with the highest number of murdered candidates with 11; the PAN with five, followed by the PRD and PRI. In the majority of cases of threats and intimidation, the names or charges are not made known out of fear, and in almost no case have the electoral authorities been informed of these situations.warns the report.

Based on these figures, this process has already exceeded the number of pre-candidates and murdered candidates compared to 2018, which confirms that violence associated with the elections has had a worrying increase trend.

According to its database, in the process six years ago, 43 murders related to electoral violence were recorded, of which 24 were of pre-candidates or candidates, while in 2021 there were 88 murders, of which 30 correspond to pre-candidates or candidacies. .

The entities with the most cases of violence are Guerrero, Veracruz and Michoacán, where there have been complaints from political parties and public officials that there are no guarantees to participate in electoral processes.

This electoral analysis center prepared a risk map, pointing out that Michoacán, Chiapas, Guerrero and Morelos represent red flags because in 2021 they were the entities where the most voting suspensions were recorded, due to violence.

It also details that of the 28 pre-candidates and candidates murdered, the first was in June 2023, another in July, one more in September, four in October, one in November, one in December, six in January 2024, five in February, six in March and two in April.
