From Humble Beginnings to Hollywood Stardom: A Look at the Early TV Roles of Famous Actors

Camille Cottin: nice snub

The day everything changed, remember? It’s this low-cost program that makes you relive often sordid news stories “as if it were true”, with actors who seem to have been recruited in the street the day before. Well actually no, because Camille Cottin was one of these actors, and she had a great background in dramatic arts with her. But you have to start somewhere, and before becoming the “asshole” on duty, we will also see her in Pep’s, alongside Rayane Bensetti. What we didn’t know was that Camille was only at ten percent of her capacity at the time.

Ryan Gosling : classe mannequin

We can no longer imagine him without his casual chic look, his beautiful suits on the red carpets and his charming air. And yet, you only have to go back to 1997 to realize that the darling ofEva Mendes hasn’t always been so stylish. In the 44 episodes of Cruise Class in which he made his debut, Ryan displayed an improbable style. Long skater shorts, Hawaiian shirts, choker necklace… Sean, the character he plays is far from being a fashion plate. Fortunately, the 90s are only a distant memory.

Jean-Paul Rouve: eyes in fine

He lived some, lives! The father of the Tuche family cannot be accused of having played on the same register his entire career… From the TF1 detective series Julie Lescaut, where he played brigadier Léveil, to the dramas, with Monsieur Batignole or La Môme , through ultra-popular comedies, Jean-Paul Rouve turns everything he touches into gold. This great success does not prevent him from having a fond look at his beginnings… “I learned a lot. There’s nothing to be ashamed of, we’re doing our job. When you start, whether you’re in an Almodóvar, in a series or in a buddy film, each actor puts his whole heart into it.”

Julie Gayet: a smashing first

Five seconds is the amount of air time that the producers of First Kisses gave to the actress in her debut. In 1992, she appeared furtively in episode 95 of the famous series. A television moment that she still cherishes today: “It was pretty cool because I came in, I slapped the boys and I came out. And I had received my salary,” she remembers. As the late Emmanuelle sang in the credits of the series, “you don’t forget it, when it’s the first time…”

Leonardo DiCaprio: Undercover

Nothing exists before Jack in Titanic, nothing exists after… And yet, before drowning miserably in the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean when he clearly had room on the board that selfish Rose was squatting, Leonardo DiCaprio had already made a name for himself in show biz. Between 1991 and 1992, he played Luke Brower in What’s New, Doctor? by Neal Marlens. A nice role which will serve as a lifeline for him in the film industry.

Alice Taglioni: the hell of the decor

Cinema star, wife of Laurent Delahousse, the beautiful actress, like many others, started with poor roles. Her path to fame began in fact with an appearance in Hélène and the boys…, of which she retains a somewhat sickening aftertaste. “I can tell you that if at the time there had already been #MeToo… I know I would have felt uncomfortable. I felt a little ogled. You really have to say what is,” recounted Alice who had already understood that it was everything… except Wonderland.

Brad Pitt: class in Dallas

Fight Club? Seven? Thelma and Louise? Do not search anymore. The first time you saw the face of an angel Brad Pitt on screen was in Dallas and its ruthless world. In 1987, the handsome guy landed the role of Randy, a character who appeared in five episodes of the series. It won’t take much more for his career to take off and the doors of cinema to open. A chance, because before this role, he did a series of odd jobs, such as that of a sandwich man for a fast-food chain. It’s called being a Brad-er!

Mathilde Seigner: the fantastic rise

©COADIC GUIREC / BESTIMAGE

We remember Framboisier, Minet or Hilguegue… But strangely, no Mathilde Seigner! However, the popular actress of French cinema did indeed make an appearance in Salut les Muscles, this sitcom revolving around the life of Dorothée’s musicians. This will in no way prevent him from trying his hand at auteur cinema, with success, then returning to the campsite to have a good time. A decidedly unclassifiable actress, whose success we could not have predicted by seeing her in this rather silly character. So you can start very badly… And end on a high note.

Tomer Sisley: Bushy all flame

At the time, it was not Largo Winch. It’s just Nico! He lives with his two sisters in a large villa without mom or dad, and all three take singing and dancing lessons… to become stars. This is the fairly basic pitch for Studio Sud, an M6 sitcom which will not last more than three months. Despite everything, it made it possible to launch Séverine Ferrer, who will go on to Fan de, and the handsome guy with dark eyes, who will have a great career in the cinema. Too bad he didn’t keep this fresh cut… which smoothed out the landscape!

Hilary Swank: before Beverly Hills

After years of hanging out in Hollywood dreaming of breaking through, Hilary finally lands what she thinks is her precious ticket: the role of Carly Reynolds, Steve Sanders’ girlfriend in Beverly Hills. But after 16 episodes, she is thanked. A hard blow that will not last long. “My dismissal was one of the biggest turning points of my career, as two months later I was offered the film Boys Don’t Cry. But at the time I was devastated. I thought I was too bad to play in a series that was in decline.” A bad for a good !

Laurent Laffite: not a great experience

©Pascal Le Segretain / Pool / Bestimage

The resident of the Comédie-Française was just 20 years old when he landed his first role as an actor. And we are very far from Racine and Molière, since he portrays, for a season, Juan, a young handsome guy from the Classe Mannequin series. But he doesn’t really have good memories of it… “Well, it’s true that it was quite painful. […] They told me: ‘You’ll see, it will be the French Friends!’ Well, I quickly saw that it wasn’t.” A disappointment which will give him “a kick in the ass”, since
Laurent will then decide to enter the Conservatory. Too bad for him, he could have had a great role in Camping Paradis.

Shailene Woodley: bingo among bigots

If you want cheesy, cheesy, corny, go watch The Secret Life of an Ordinary Teenager. This series broadcast on the right-thinking channel ABC Family depicts the daily life of a Christian high school girl who breaks her promise of chastity, becomes pregnant by the school’s playboy and decides (obviously) to keep the child. In the role of Amy Juergens, round as a balloon, we discover the star of Divergent, Shailene Woodley. For five seasons, each more polished than the last, she will play the teen mom. The road to glory? A real way of the cross!

Jessica Alba: the big dive

The star collected a few small roles between the ages of 13 and 15. But not enough to get her into the deep end. In 1995, she was finally spotted during a casting that would change her life. The producers of The New Adventures of Flipper the Dolphin offered her the role of young Maya Graham, one of the heroines of the show. She then flew to Australia where she spent nearly two years filming 44 episodes for four seasons. A great experience which allowed her to be chosen to play in Beverly Hills, then Dark Angel, and to stop dabbling with the wannabe stars.
