It is well known that rap listeners are heavy consumers of streaming platforms. So how do artists make money if you don’t go directly to the store to buy a project? We often hear rappers talk about streaming, complain about it or debate it. So, the Statista site produced a graph which reveals the number of plays necessary for an artist to pocket 1 euro. All platforms are compared: Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal, YouTube Music, Amazon Music et Napster.
If we read this document, we understand that the platform most profitable for a rapper is Napster, the least profitable being YouTube on which you have to accumulate 1612 streams to earn 1 euro. Statista’s numbers easily make us want to grab our calculator.
Moreover, we quickly understand why Jay-Z wanted to launch his own streaming platform in collaboration with other American artists. Indeed, on Tidal, 89 streams bring in 1 euro to the artist. When this project was launched, Jay-Z surrounded himself with all the biggest music sellers in the USA and around the world: Beyoncé, Rihanna Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Kanye West, J Cole, Usher, Daft Punk, Alicia Keys and others. The New York rapper then said during the launch party: “The challenge is for everyone to respect music and its values again. To listen to the best music, you have to support the artists (…) because everyone knows that the system is unfair with the singers. Music is everywhere, we consume it every day. “ Her friend and singer Alicia Keys declared in turn : “We are here to change the history of music. Today, we are announcing the birth of the first music platform that belongs to artists.”
