From Hate to Love: Behind the Scenes with Andri Buli on STV First!

For the first time on STV First! in history, the production of the domestic series “From hate to love” has been started, which will be released on the entertainment platform Tet TV+ already this fall, while STV Pirmha! viewers will be delighted at the beginning of next year. Portal 1188.lv had the opportunity to go behind the scenes of filming the series and talk to one of the main actors – the charming Andri Buli.

During the filming of the series, you played the role of Ulda. What is he like?

– The bad one. Uldis uses situations that life offers. A calculator, of course. Someone will surely say that he is dishonest at times, but then I would ask – how would we act ourselves? Could Uldis, being honest, achieve anything in such situations? At the same time, he is somewhat weak because he cannot refuse offers. I mean – a person who is actually unhappy.

I play such people to make others feel good at my expense.

Is it easy for you to get into his character?

– This is the case when I don’t have the opportunity to fall into demagogy during the filming process, that is, to think what he is like and to whip myself. The pace of filming is fast, the dialogues must be fluent, because it is a series, not a feature film, in which you have to tell the story of this person in an hour and a half. There are many episodes here.

Hard or easy… Sometimes it’s rather difficult for me to justify Uldi, because maybe I wouldn’t do it myself. You just need to understand his actions. Now that I’ve lived for a while with the fact that there are people like him, then all that’s left is to get high. (Laughs).

Watching the scenes of filming, you can understand that the actors have got into the character. How do you feel on the set?

– Since one day of filming takes at least 12 hours a day, there are a lot of texts to learn. My record is 18 episodes a day. Of course, when the project comes to an end, there will also be night shifts, but that is the whole crust of this profession – you have to count on it. Just focus and enjoy!

Is there any vivid curiosity that has remained in your memory since the beginning of the filming of the series?

– I think it would be funny for the audience from the outside to see how two people are trying to seduce each other, while the tuner, lighting and two operators are huddled in a corner just to not disturb us. I haven’t had such big curiosities at the moment, but there are many more to come.

How would you rate cooperation with the film crew?

– I know everyone – Intars Rešetins, Kristīne Nevarauska and Lelde Dreimane are my colleagues from Dailes Theater, but I am glad to be in the frame with Kristīni, because we have never filmed together. It’s cool to meet in the frame, to fuck with Jānis Āmani. Now and then we also manage to meet colleagues whom we don’t really meet during the theater, because everyone plays in a different building. I’m really glad that the basic team or core is very strong – the same Imants Strads, Vita Vārpiņa…

With the hectic schedule of filming ‘From Hate to Love’, you might be very busy on a daily basis. What is your daily routine?

– This morning is a very classic variant – early morning, at 7.45 I had my make-up on. I got up earlier because I had to take my daughter to kindergarten. Soon I will run to the theater rehearsal, then back to the filming.

The most difficult thing is just ahead, because we start concerts from June 6th – respectively, from June 1st there are two rehearsals a day in Dailes Theater, then in between the filming of the series. The work is sweet, everything can be tolerated, there are no problems. Of course, it is more difficult to prepare when there is a concert or other event at the same time and there are many scenes, but the director very calmly allows us to work with the text in such a way that it is logical and understandable for both the actors and the audience. I am very happy for the cinematographers Kristina and Andreja, who are able to compose the shots very beautifully. I want to say a big thank you to the team, because we sometimes film in tense situations – we have to quickly move to another filming location, many actors, someone didn’t manage to do something… Uldi, thank you for your calmness, because I have worked with different directors who suddenly start shouting in tense situations or show dissatisfaction.

What does love and hate mean to your character?

– From love to hate is one step, but from hate to love is a longer way. If you love, then it is a conflict; Shakespeare discovered it already.

What do you wish for our Latvian beauties who will soon be able to watch the series on their TV screens?

– Love and let yourself be loved, because money cannot buy that. If you love someone, don’t be shy to say it, because maybe these words are unexpectedly more important to the other person at some point than we think.

Don’t want to live life and not be able to say “I love you” to someone.

Do we say thank you more often, smile. It often doesn’t require anything, but maybe you made that person feel better. Love yourself and the world will love you!
