Genius: Aretha
It took a bit of build and a lot of self-confidence to claim to know how to interpret Aretha Franklin. Cynthia Erivo has it all and carries her character at arm’s length in this series – third in the Genius collection – dedicated to the life and career of this soul goddess. More than a simple biopic, Aretha traces the path of emancipation traveled by a woman certain to have a gift lent by God and to be protected from the violence of the world by her song. In an America where segregation still rules, pastor’s daughter Aretha Franklin is such a gifted child that she gets all the attention when she sings in church. Her talent did not escape her family, and certainly not her father who introduced her to the gospel circuit, the singer’s first step in the music business. Aretha is again the story of an artist who, by dynamising frames and formats, turns soul upside down. So this is the story of a revolutionary. – SM

A Teacher
A series which unvarnishedly depicts the “passion” of a high school student and his teacher. What is strong here is that this is not an impossible or scandalous love story like we have seen wheelbarrows in TV movies or college dramas, but a fiction of today ‘hui, which offers another reading of relationships that are a little quick to say “in love”. Kate Mara, who brings all her ambiguity to the main character, insisted on this message when we met: ”It’s not just some crisp fiction about forbidden love. The series actually tells about their meeting and the game of seduction… But it devotes its entire second part to its serious consequences on the characters. It is not love that binds them. It is a case of abuse of power by an adult over a teenager. We don’t often talk about male victims, who have to survive these kinds of situations.”. – H.D.

#Martyisdead
Noticed at the 48th Emmy Awards where it topped everyone in a highly prized category, this Czech 8-episode series demonstrated, if needed yet, that significant financial resources were not necessarily necessary to from the moment we had a good idea. In this specific case, it revolves around a father who, saddened by the early death of his 15-year-old son, decides to follow the astonishing virtual activity that preceded his death, with a series of mysterious videos. Taking advantage of its close collaboration with police and security experts, the series scotches at all levels (interpretation, rhythm, suspense, tone …), while addressing contemporary themes, such as the crucial issue of online harassment . – DH

Imagine, it’s about that
After The people who doubt and her fairy tale in the series Once upon a time, Fanny Ruwet is launching a new podcast, Imagine, ça parle de ça. And it is marvel. Heavy concept. The comedian invents us in fact the summary of books… according to their title. A pure squeaky style exercise, chiseled out of today’s words and wit in a crisp 4-minute format, that will hit everyone who has their “pile of shame” beside the bed. We welcome the selection of novels, which avoids clichés and mixes genres, giving us the urge to dive into the original works, just to know what’s inside for real. A literary pleasure but not that, whose only flaw is not (yet) to include a hundred episodes. – HD
