Footballers who took over the coaching bench ended up being paranoid or insane, says Gary Lineker. That’s why the former England top scorer has embarked on a media career – first as a presenter, now as a podcast entrepreneur.
He is humorous, easygoing and a celebrity on British television. Gary Lineker, ex-footballer and presenter of the country’s premier football show, Match of the Day, is also one of the BBC’s highest-paid employees. His annual salary is estimated at £1.8million. He occasionally threw in a bon mot: “Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and in the end the Germans win.” Lineker spoke from experience, after all he scored against Germany in the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup to make it 1-1 – and lost in the end.
