From Drug Abuse to Music Stardom: The Inspiring Journey of Pinka

“I grew up in a home where every day my parents shouted at each other, threw things. They hated each other,” Pinka told journalist Cecilia Vega.

Pinka said that she described herself as a punk at the time and eventually started using and selling drugs, was kicked out of her home and dropped out of high school. “I was completely off track,” she said.

“In 1995 On Thanksgiving of 2018, I was at a rave and I overdosed,” she said, adding that she had used everything that night, including ecstasy, angel dust, or phencyclidine, and crystal, or methamphetamine.

She told Vega that the combination nearly killed her.

That was the last time she used hard drugs. A few weeks later, Pinka landed her first record deal with an R&B girl group. She later began a solo career under the teenage moniker by which she is known today.

“I am more and more demanding of myself physically, emotionally, mentally, vocally. I always want to raise the bar higher,” says Pinka. “When they say that a woman should slow down, become smaller, take up less space, calm down – no. Absolutely not. Why can’t we ride until the wheels fall off?”

“I plan to do just that,” she said.
