South Carolina State University will host renowned film and television actor and singer Jason Weaver for an entertainment industry masterclass October 30-November 30. 1 on campus.
“From Dream to Screen: SCSU Industry Insider Masterclass with Jason Weaver” will be a three-day workshop designed to educate and prepare future pioneers in the entertainment industry, as well as how to establish and build a lifelong career in cinema and television. industry.
Weaver is best known for his continuing portrayal of “Rashad” in the Showtime original series “The Chi” and for his singing voice of “Simba” in the animated classic “The Lion King.”
“Our goal is to enable students to establish and maintain a lifelong career in the dynamic world of film and television by providing valuable insight into how the film industry really works and creating an experience for aspiring actors and allowing them to dissect and act out scenes and get feedback and constructive criticism,” Weaver said.
SC State students were invited to register for the course earlier this semester, and spots filled up quickly.
“This masterclass is a golden opportunity for South Carolina State University students to hear about what it takes to succeed in the extremely competitive world of entertainment,” said SC State President Alexander Conyers. “We deeply appreciate Mr. Weaver and his team’s willingness to share their valuable ideas and experiences with our students.
“I also thank Dr. Macie Smith, vice chair of the SC State Board of Trustees, for organizing and helping coordinate this fantastic enhancement to our program,” Conyers said.
Smith described having Weaver teach the class as a groundbreaking experience for SC State students.
“Here at SC State University, we create opportunities for our students to learn real-world career development skills,” Smith said. “Not only will they receive one-on-one training from an incredibly talented actor and businessman, but they will also have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills through role-playing and receive constructive communication on areas for improvement.”

Start exploring potential career paths to the entertainment industry and get insightful advice and best practices on how to grow in your career. Potential career path areas such as cinematography, wardrobe, makeup, otherwise known as digital visual effects (CGI), editing, and screenwriting. Build confidence around the art form of acting and other positions in the industry through practice working on stage and developing techniques. Be able to effectively apply technique and acting styles to effectively produce a self-recorded tape audition for a film/television project. Better understand the benefits and ever-changing business model that currently exists in the entertainment industry. Learn more about the current actors’ and writers’ strike and the importance of unions in the film and television industry. Get first-hand insight into the industry from notable actors and artists who have years of experience in the film and television industry.
Weaver’s visit is coordinated with the SC State College of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
