Delhaize has appointed a franchisee for each of the 128 stores it still managed under its own management. Most of the franchisees have already taken over the stores. According to Delhaize, there was a dire need to move to independent entrepreneurs, because most of his own stores are making losses. Delhaize management says that an independent entrepreneur knows the customers in his area better and can therefore better respond to their needs. But the announcement of the franchise caused a wave of strikes for months last year, as workers feared that working conditions under a franchisee would not be as good.

Gazet van Antwerpen spoke to eight workers and former workers who were recently taken over by a franchisee, and who testified to serious violations of labor regulations. Those eight work or work at five different Delhaize branches in the Antwerp area. They say many workers are under great pressure to quit. Then the franchisee does not have to pay full compensation to them. They also confirm that they are under pressure to work on Sundays, although this is not stated in their employment contract.
