For all the support programs for Cuba that the World Food Program (WFP) has carried out in various areas over the last decades, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and president thanked this Friday afternoon of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, to the regional director of that United Nations organization, María Dolores Castro.
When welcoming him at the Palace of the Revolution, the head of state also highlighted “the support they have given for the development of agricultural production with means and inputs destined for a group of economic actors,” as well as the way quick in that the WFP “always responds with resources when we have been affected by natural disasters.”
Likewise, the president recognized the contributions made to our country, from the expertise of this organization, in terms of concepts and theory “when we were working on the Law of Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education.”
The gratitude to you is tremendous, for contributing to the economic and social development of Cuba, assured President Díaz-Canel, who also ratified “the political will” of the Greater Antilles to continue working together with the WFP and also develop triangular projects, mainly in the area of Latin America and the Caribbean.
At the end of the dialogue, in statements to the press team of the Presidency of the Republic, the regional director of the World Food Program commented on the visit she made in recent days to the municipalities of Caibarién and Sagua la Grande, in the province of Villa Clara, where we have seen, he said, how the food sovereignty project is progressing, in which the WFP works together with the Cuban Government.
In reference to the historic ties of the WFP with Cuba, he recalled that this year will mark exactly 60 years since its beginning. In that time, he commented, “we have worked a lot, and now more on the issue of change and the climate crisis, because as we know, hurricanes are getting stronger, droughts are getting stronger and affecting a greater part of the population. ”.
Cuba, in its opinion, on an issue as sensitive for the region and the world as food, has taken a significant step by approving the food sovereignty policy, which is now being implemented.
There is still “a long way to go to ensure everything related to it,” he stressed, because “it is not just production, it is also transportation, access and use of food, so that everyone has the right products at the right time.” , but in Cuba a lot of progress is being made through this policy” with the purpose of contributing to food sovereignty.
