From classrooms to film festivals against sexist violence

Torrox (Málaga), Jan 31 (EFE) .- Students aged 12 to 17 from a Malaga high school have made a short film with the aim of identifying sexist behaviors to fight against gender violence and will present it at national film festivals.

The production, titled “Andrea’s decision”, lasts 16 minutes and has been completely recorded in the center, has received the support of the Malaga Education Delegation for its dissemination and maintains open lines of collaboration with the Ministry of Equality of the Junta de Andalucía.

Other institutions such as the Andalusian Institute for Women (IAM), the Provincial Council or the University of Malaga (UMA) are also open to cooperate with the IES Alfaguar (Torrox), whose project aims to reduce the incidence of sexist violence in youth and it has been carried out by the producer and director David Navas, from Nerja (Málaga).

The director has detailed to Efe that the short film is about a young man who tries to distance his partner from his group of friends, a “small pattern that can go further” and end, for example, in a verbal or physical aggression. which mainly focuses on identifying and preventing attitudes such as micromachisms.

Navas has had the participation of the screenwriter Antonio Martín and the actress Blanca Pomar, and has made a casting to which more than 150 students have participated. A professional recording equipment has also been used to achieve “the highest possible quality”.

This audiovisual production is a project that arose as a result of the initiative “Ventilating gender violence” carried out by the students of the center, which consisted of airing sheets with phrases against sexist violence, which, in the opinion of the director of the center, Rosa Torres, had “a lot of impact” and encouraged them for new projects.

Torres has explained to Efe how “difficult” it has been to work on the project while the coronavirus pandemic does not give truce, since more than fifty students have participated in it – and the mother of one of them-, in addition to teachers, who they had to comply with anti-covid security measures.

He has shown his enthusiasm for the short film, in which the City Council of the town also collaborates, to be exhibited at the Malaga Film Festival, since he considers that the short has potential for this and will be presented because they think that participating in this edition would be great”.

The institute’s teacher and the short film’s helper, Sandra García, told Efe that this initiative has been “very enriching for the educational community” and added that the objective of the audiovisual work is not only to be part of film festivals, but to be “a tool” to work in classrooms at other centers.

Within its program “Ventilating gender violence”, the IES Alfaguar de Torrox will carry out other actions such as a free online course on sexist violence and a mobile application to identify the authentic values of love, among other projects, always with the objective of fighting this scourge.
