“I earn a salary of 5,000 yuan but don’t have much anxiety. I can rest on holidays and it’s nice. You’re less stressed when your colleagues are not humans. Pigs won’t call you in the middle of the night to ask to edit a proposal,” said Xiao Zhu.

Even so, Xiao admitted that his work had made him nauseous, especially when taking care of giving birth to pigs. But now he is more resistant and used to it because he has worked there for two years.

“The pig’s placenta has a very unpleasant smell so I often feel nauseous. When a pig has dystocia, I have to put my whole hand into the pig’s body to pull out the calf. My hands get very sticky and covered in blood,” said Xiao.
