“From Circus Stable Boy to Puppeteer: The Adventurous Life Story of Mr. Chasperli”

Outliers – circus stable boy – puppeteer: Peter Rüesch from Wil wrote down the adventurous life story of “Mr. Chasperli”.

Ruedi and Marcella Schmid traveled through Switzerland with their Kasperlitheater for around thirty years. As they grew older and settled in Winterthur, Peter Rüesch became a close associate of the couple. The longtime Sirnach community clerk wants to prevent their history from being forgotten.

The life story of Rudolf Schmid reads like an exciting book: «In 1922, at the age of ten, little Ruedi overheard his parents discussing giving him away to Germany as a contract boy. That same night he gathered his few belongings and ran away from home. His path led him from Chur to Rapperswil, where he was accepted as a stable boy at the Knie circus and worked his way up to the position of stable master.» Thus begins a dossier in which Wiler Peter Rüesch wrote down the life story and his memories of Ruedi Schmid and his later wife Marcella.
