From Canada to Krumke for a World Cup

Krumke/Bern. – It is high season for equestrian athletes. The voltigeurs from Krumke are also travelling from one competition to the next. The European Championship and World Championship have now been ticked off. Today the athletes from the Stendal district will be competing in the German Championship in Prussendorf.

But let’s start from the beginning: For the U18 and U21 starters it was the European Championship in vaulting, for the seniors (over 21 years old) it was the World Championship. In Bern, or more precisely in the largest ice rink in Switzerland, it was once again a matter of showing that Krumke is right up there with the world’s best gymnasts. While the horses were being housed in the National Horse Center, the participants from the Stendal district first had to shake off the night-time journey and take a closer look at the competition venue, the Post Finance Arena in Bern. Heart palpitations were inevitable.

“Amari Santamaria Diaz competed for us at the European Championships together with her longeur Hauke Thümmler and her pony Meran,” says Charlotte Schumann, the trainer of the Krumke I vaulting group. “She comes from the Groß Quassow club in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but has been with us since 2019 to compete in the team here. Since this year she has also been competing for us in the pas de deux (in pairs).”

At the World Championships, Charlotte Schumann was in demand as a lunge leader. Canadian Charlotte Axani presented herself with the Krumker horse Morpheus. From September 2023, she was based in Osterburg, training and helping out at the Krumke equestrian center. How did the 22-year-old Cross-Fit trainer come across Krumke?

“She heard about me through a friend from Magdeburg and was looking for a horse to take part in the World Championships,” reveals Charlotte Schumann. Since Marion Schulze passed the baton to her in 2023, the 26-year-old has been the number one lunge leader. Just the right person for the Canadian.

“After the club accepted, Charlotte came to Altmark for a year and lived with my family in Osterburg.” Her dream came true. Finally, the World Championships. But a mistake in the compulsory performance cost her points. While Charlotte Axani had to settle for 22nd place, Amari Santamaria Diaz impressed the jury with a very good performance and as the youngest starter. With a score of 7.897, the 13-year-old secured second place. A day later, she started to get nervous, her trainer describes. Despite this, she managed an 8.0 for her freestyle and was in third place overall. “Charlotte secured 17th place,” Charlotte Schumann sums up.

“Amari Santamaria Diaz is also competing as the reigning German champion,” says Charlotte Schumann. The dentist, who started vaulting at the age of six, hardly has any time to catch her breath. After work, she goes from Eilsleben near Magdeburg to Krumke. “So that it continues,” she emphasizes. With her left hand, by the way. Whether it’s vaulting, volleyball or handicrafts. She knows exactly why: “You don’t want to stop.”
