From Bluetooth to AirPlay: AirLino Pro streaming box in the test

If you want to wirelessly supply music to older receivers, active boxes and the like, you need a streaming receiver. The mobile device usually receives the audio data via Bluetooth and forwards it to the aux input of, for example, the analog receiver.

The AirLino Pro works on exactly this principle, but can do a lot more. The small box allows data to be sent via WLAN, which drastically improves the radio range. In addition, it can be integrated into the home network via Ethernet.

The AirLino Pro masters all common streaming processes such as DLNA and UPnP; he also speaks AirPlay, even if only version 1. In practice, it doesn’t matter, after all, Apple has quietly integrated expanded multi-room audio (different music in different rooms) into AirPlay 1. The connection to the equipment to be loaded is either analog via a stereo mini jack or digital via Toslink cable.

Speakers with AirLino can also be set up and controlled via the app.

The AirLino Pro also allows other audio devices to be used as sound sources and their signals to be sent to other AirLinos. For example, the CD player in the bedroom could stream music to the hi-fi system in the living room. You then needed two AirLinos. Unfortunately, these audio streams cannot be sent to other AirPlay devices, such as a HomePod or a Sonos 1.

The same applies to the USB port of the box, to which any data medium formatted as FAT32 can be connected. The AirLino Pro recognizes the media files stored there and, if necessary, plays them back to the audio device at its output. The manufacturer has not provided for the streaming of this data on AirPlay devices.

The box acts as a self-sufficient internet radio, which can be operated quite comfortably via the free app for iOS and iPadOS, and there is also an Android app. The app is also used to configure the receiver, set up a network of several AirLinos and compile playlists. If you use your AirLino under AirPlay, you will rarely come into contact with the app.

Manufacturer: Lintech // Inputs: 1 × stereo mini jack, 1 × Toslink // Outputs: 1 × stereo mini jack, 1 × Toslink // Streaming: Bluetooth, WLAN / LAN (UpnP, DLNA, Spotify Connect, Songcast, AirPlay) // integrated web radio // DAC: 24 bit / 192 kHz // Dimensions: 128 × 100 × 30 mm // Price: approx. 150 euros

The AirLino Pro sounds flawless, with its resolution of 24 bit and 192 kHz it more than satisfies even demanding audio nerds. In radio mode, it is also completely inconspicuous; We could not detect any dropouts or hooks during the test phase. If you can do without the audio inputs and the USB connection, the simple AirLino gives you an alternative that is around 60 euros cheaper
