From a handful of babies – Antonia is already 12 years old – 2024-08-23 08:15:45

For 12 years, a Romanian family has not forgotten the doctors from UMBAL Burgas, who saved their baby’s life. Every August 13, Christina and Julian Domitro thank the Maternity Ward and the Neonatology Ward for their Antonia. And they always try to celebrate this day here in Burgas.

In 2012, the family was on vacation in Sunny Beach, when labor began prematurely – at the end of the sixth month. A decision was made for an emergency section and a baby girl weighing only 740 grams was born. They christened her after the head of the Maternity Department, Dr. Antonio Dushepeev, and prayed that she would survive – before that, the mother had two pregnancies that ended unsuccessfully.

In the Department of Neonatology, Antonia takes over the experienced Dr. Slava Kolarova. Almost three months of care followed before the family took her back to Romania. The family does not forget their rescuers and constantly maintains contact with them. In the intensive care unit, there is a whole wall of photos of Antonia, from a handful of babies in an incubator to a slender girl passionate about classical ballet.

Over its long history, the Department of Neonatology at UMBAL Burgas has accumulated thousands of such memories, and August is the month of gratitude from abroad. During the summers in years past, premature babies were born here to parents spending their holidays in Burgas. Photos, videos and thanks are coming from Kazakhstan, Sweden, Romania, Turkey, Italy, Israel. Even today, the ward cares for babies from Germany. And for critical patients transferred from other hospitals.

“There is no greater reward than that your work has meaning. It’s exciting to see how a tiny baby, who was a challenge for the whole department, is now a big and intelligent person,” said the doctors in the Department of Neonatology.

Today, thanks to advances in medical science, it is possible for even extremely low birth weight newborns to survive and develop without health consequences. This requires both knowledge and skills as well as high-tech equipment. Last week, the Department of Neonatology received another donation – a lamp for phototherapy of newborns. It was purchased with funds from donors and grateful parents.
