From 1 January 2024, compost bins will be mandatory in France for all of us

This is one of the points of the law against food waste, from 1 January 2024 all French people must have a compost bin for organic waste. Many municipalities have anticipated the implementation of the law.

After the end of plastic packaging, the development of bulk, composting arrives. From 1 January 2024, all French people must have a composter at home or deposit their organic waste in the composts made available by the municipalities in public space.

It is one of the provisions of the law against food waste of February 2020. When you peel your vegetables, when you eat a banana or when you peel your eggs for example, you will no longer throw your waste in the black bin, but in the composter.

If you have a garden, you can install a large compost bin. You can find this type of item in wood, aluminum or plastic at garden centers. They have a capacity that can generally range from 150 to 600 litres, and their price varies between 40 and 200 euros.

For the kitchen, garden centers recommend compost bins with earthworms that do the recycling job. They are smaller and have a lid that prevents unpleasant smells.

Most French municipalities have not waited for the law to arrive to set up compost bins in public spaces or to provide them to residents, in the same way as garbage cans.

L’agglomeration of Angoulême has been setting up public compost bins for 3 years. Today they are about sixty, by 2024 there will be 120 distributed over the 38 municipalities of the agglomeration.

In Iagglomeration of Poitiers, the composters are distributed to residents who have a garden and the collective composters are installed in buildings or houses that do not have a garden. The agglomeration is also offering a grant of 15 euros to residents who buy an individual composter or vermicomposter.

in La Rochellecomposting is an old practice and the website of urban community offers many events on composting and distributing bins to residents.

In Niort and throughout the CAN (Niort Agglo) In addition, individual compost bins are available for residents and every week compostable waste is collected in green bins.

It is estimated that in France every inhabitant throws away 85 kilos of organic waste every year. However, when harvested separately, they can serve as a natural fertilizer to enrich the soil. They can also be transformed into biogas which will, for example, run public transport buses.
