A certain lightness: The Narrenkastl in Frohnleiten shows the art of Georg Dinstl until the end of August.
Georg Dinstl has long been a big name in the local art scene. Born in Vienna, raised in Frohnleiten and now at home in Graz, he literally brings an excerpt from his work to the city community. This can be seen in the art off-space Narrenkastl on the main square until the end of August.
Art in the collective
“It has been difficult to start as a star,” Dinstl once said. Probably because he became acquainted with music even before his art. As the singer of the punk rock band Antimaniax, which was founded in 1998 and still exists today, he toured Europe several times. At the same time he dealt with painting and graphics and founded the artist collective “Das Voyeur” with Thomas Pokorn, Mischa Mendlik and Gernot Passath as well as “Permanent Unit” with Simon Lemmerer, Oliver Tomann and Josef Wurm, which turned the streets into a street art project . One of the best-known works as Sprayer, in which he was involved, is the one that adorns the building of the Graz professional fire brigade and was created in 2010 as part of the lumbar vertebra. Or the couple of bears that adorn the oversized facade of a company in Gabersdorf.
Full of contradictions
Whether commissioned work or spontaneous action: it almost seems as if Dinstl wants his art to be discovered before he can bring it to the observer. A conflict. Writer and journalist Mathias Grilj once said that the artist was full of contradictions: proud, but too good for himself for his work, and he loves the insolence, but at the same time Dinstl completed the master class for painting at the Ortweinschule.
Narrenkastl curator Ulli Gollesch brings the artist to his home community. “I’ve known Georg since I was little, and our paths through art finally crossed again about twelve years ago when I spoke to him in the old bubble bath (editor’s note: free Atelierhaus Graz). I’ve been following since then his artistic development, “she says. “His works of art are powerful, strong, combined with a certain lightness. The development from the portrait series homage to Schiele to the current series of works – a lot has happened there. I am thrilled.”
