Fright Nights 2023: The Void and Other Horrors Await at Playland

New is The Void, where monstrous beasts roam the dense forests of the Pacific Northwest.

Starting tonight (October 6), Playland is getting into the Halloween spirit with the 2023 edition of Fright Nights on select nights in October.

It’s the 20th anniversary of the East Vancouver attraction, which this year features eight haunted houses, more than 15 rides, spooky decorations, roaming monsters and live shows.

New is “one of the scariest haunted houses in Fright Nights history,” The Void, where monstrous beasts haunt the dense forests of the Pacific Northwest. “In the middle of a lush and beautiful forest lie the Howling Caves. Many will say it’s a coincidence that people often disappear on trails and near caves.

Carn-Evil is another haunted house in Playland. “If you hate clowns, beware of this house because the clowns in Fright Nights are evil. In this haunted house, clowns are humanoid creatures that live beneath our feet in the sewers, where they reproduce and grow as they encounter radioactive toxic waste.

The food in Fright Nights is also scary, with zombie fingers, vampire cookies, skeleton apples, and hot dogs that look like fingers.

During Scaremony’s opening night, characters Venom and Coco greet Fright Nights guests “as our scare actors emerge from the fog in a completely unique immersive performance” at the park entrance at 6 p.m.

Due to demand, Fright Nights is limiting the number of tickets sold per day and must be purchased for a specific date. Evening events have limited availability and may sell out. Admission includes unlimited access to all eight haunted houses, shows and rides. For more information, visit www.frightnights.ca.

• Meanwhile, Surrey’s House of Horrors attraction has a new Halloween haunt, with ticket buyers blindfolded and using a rope to navigate a dark maze where “actors perform terrifying tactile horrors”.

The new Sinneraria venue “Blackout” in Newton requires an additional ticket during House of Horrors at Cougar Creek, which began Friday, September 29.

This year, the live theatrical horror attraction is open 24 days, ending with two “Whisper Nights” on November 3 and 4, where “victims” use flashlights in a maze filled with “faint noises, of dim lights and hidden monsters.”

For kids 12 and younger, the schedule includes six Horrors Jr. Haunt daytime sessions, starting October 14, without actors and with quieter sounds, on weekends from 2 to 5 p.m.

This year’s three haunted houses are Echoes of Abbath, New Year’s Evil and Zycho Zerkus. There’s also an escape room, The XMAS Escape From Incineration, where guests solve puzzles and search for clues.

Details about the haunting will be posted at cougarcreekhouseofhorrors.com, where tickets are sold.

The attraction is located on 72nd Avenue and partners with the Surrey Food Bank to collect donations at the door. Part of the profits from ticket sales will also be donated to the association.

After a COVID-related cancellation in 2020, House of Horrors returned to Newton in 2021 with a new name and new owners after longtime Potter employees Chris Perhick and Scott Pasternak purchased and renamed the garden center. The quiet year of 2020 was the first time since 2003 that haunted houses were not operating.
