Researchers from Michigan State University in America said that a friend is more than just someone with whom we say goodbye to our secrets. In a recent study, researchers dealt with the cultural and health benefits of close human relationships.
“Friendships are one of the untapped resources that people can turn to to continue a healthier, happier life … They are, literally, costless and have benefits for health and well-being,” said William Chopik, an assistant professor of psychology at the university and the lead author of the study.
The study, published by Frontiers of Psychology, is the largest of its kind and included 323,200 participants from 99 countries.
Chopik added, “We found that placing a value on friendship is beneficial to human health and happiness, regardless of where they live … However, seeing friendships as an important part of life is more important in some cultures than others.”
The researchers found that those who invested in friendships had better mental and physical health, especially older adults or those with less education. And the benefits are most evident in cultures that are characterized by individualism, inequality and restriction, according to what was reported by “Medical Express” on the study.
