Friend: – He needs help

HITRA / OSLO (Dagbladet): Top sports week is underway at Hitra, but the event is marked by a gloomy backdrop.

Northug’s rough driving – and the drug seizures at his home – have hit like a bomb in the cross-country environment. On Friday, we will hear the former ski king’s own version of what has happened.

It happens at a press conference in Trondheim at 12.00.

Helene Marie Fossesholm and Erik Valnes won 20 kilometers of roller skiing at Hitra on Thursday night. But afterwards came the inevitable questions: How have the practitioners reacted to the Northug news?

In total, he is charged with three counts. In the worst case, a prison sentence awaits.

– I was very sorry on his behalf, says Niklas Dyrhaug when Dagbladet meets him at Hitra.

He is clearly moved.

– I know he’s having a hard time. But of course he must be responsible for what he has done. It is important that he receives proper follow-up and help – professional help – so that he can recover from the disability he has come up with.

– What did he say to you?

– We have not talked so much. It’s heavy, of course. There’s not much more to say about it, really. We’ll find out a little more tomorrow, I think.

– Did you know that he did other things than alcohol?

– No, I did not know. It’s sad, so you get to see what comes out of the blood test.

Johannes Høsflot Klæbo believes the case can be divided into two dimensions:

– It is the action itself, and the man Petter Northug in this. The action is something I strongly dissociate myself from. As a role model and role model, you have a responsibility. As a motorist in traffic, you also have a responsibility. It is completely irresponsible to put oneself and others in human danger in this way.

Klæbo continues:

– But we must also see man in the whole thing. I hope he gets help from those around him. I myself have sent him a message. What we have talked about will remain between us. He must take the spoon in hand and take responsibility for what has happened – and the future.

NB: Top sports week continues with a sprint in Aure on Friday and ends with a hunting start in Granåsen in Trondheim on Saturday.
