Friedrichstrasse is now car-free

Berlin’s Friedrichstrasse becomes car-free. Instead of full streets and cars, there should be seating and bike paths – and that earlier than expected.

The model project car-free Friedrichstrasse in Berlin is running. Although the project does not officially begin until August 29, the section between Französischer Straße and Leipziger Straße will be closed on Friday from 6 a.m. Then marking work and other preparations should begin, as the district office in Mitte announced.

The shopping mile will be off-limits for cars until the end of January. Instead, a “promenade” with greenery, trees, seating, Bike path and outdoor restaurants invite you to stroll and linger.

With the model project, the Mitte district and the Senate want to test how the quality of stay in the city can be increased and public space can be redistributed. Business and trade associations as well as the opposition in the House of Representatives criticize the attempt as having no concept.
