But first things first: When Merz campaigned for the votes of the delegates in the CDU studio, he also spoke about the “socially weak” in society. They too “find a heart and affection with us,” he said – and immediately added: “Let me say a word about women in this context.”
Many observers find this transition not very elegant, even if it was meant ironically. “Stromberg couldn’t have done it better,” writes the author of a well-received tweet. The television character Stromberg did not go down in television history as an emancipated female friend.
After the party congress, Merz caused a stir with a surprising move: he offered Laschet to join the current federal government and take over the Ministry of Economics from Peter Altmaier (CDU), as he wrote on Twitter. Chancellor Angela Merkel immediately rejected this. “The Chancellor is not planning any government reshuffle,” said a government spokesman when asked.
Twitter users took Merz ‘initiative as an opportunity to advertise their own cause and brought themselves into play for more or less important positions. The pianist Igor Levit showed a picture of pickled chili peppers and applied for the not yet existing office of “Chili Oil Minister”. His short-term prospects are likely to be as slim as Merz’s for a seat at the cabinet table.
The former pirate politician Marina Weisband, on the other hand, used Merz’s submission to apply for an office that still exists. She offers her work as Minister of Education. However, this offer is also given little chance.
Armin Laschet was elected as the successor to Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer as chairman of the digital federal party conference on Saturday. He prevailed in a runoff election with 521 to 466 votes against ex-Union parliamentary group leader Merz.
With the election of the party chairman, the CDU ended an almost one-year stalemate after Kramp-Karrenbauer had declared in February 2020 that it would not run again for the CDU chairmanship. It remains to be seen who will lead the Union as candidate for chancellor in the federal election.
