Friedman and Aven’s LetterOne Firm Raises Concerns in Latvia – National Security Committee Investigates

Friedman and Aven’s biggest asset in the west is the investment firm “LetterOne”. After the oligarchs’ shares were frozen, a minority shareholder had a say, and this allowed the company to continue operating.

Last year, the company paid bonuses to the management in the amount of 65 million US dollars, causing speculation in the press about a possible circumvention of sanctions. Now Fridman has returned to Russia.

Whether Avena’s stay in Latvia is a security threat has been discussed both in the halls of the Saeima and the government. Officials say they are powerless until security services find evidence that Aven is financing the war against Ukraine.

“Nothing personal” asked the questions of interest to the chairman of the National Security Committee of the Saeima, Ainars Latkovskis.

NP: It is a security risk for the country?

Latkovskis: Of course there is. From the beginning. Plus the US decision to put him on the sanctions list and the information that he has turned against Ukraine, whose independence we support both financially and militarily, their efforts to protect their country.

In response to the question asked by “Nekā peresigsika” whether SAB has received information that Aven is looking for both lobbying and legal support inside Latvia, which would help to cancel sanctions decisions, the Swede answers that “periodically this type of informal information appears, of course, but the service there is no information at our disposal that, if anything like that happens, these issues are gaining some kind of positive direction.”

Received letters of support from Latvian officials

“Nothing personal” already reported that at the beginning of last year, Aven sent a letter to the Ministry of Justice and Foreign Affairs through sworn lawyer Andras Mälenders, in which he protested against the fact that Latvia torpedoed his attempt to challenge the sanctions of the European Union in court. He considered them unfounded.
